Appearance
Klavier is generally tall for his age, standing at about 5'10", and is the stereotypical blond-haired, blue-eyed pretty boy. Sans the bangs falling rather sloppily over his face, he has imitated his brother's hair style perfectly: the back portion twisting into a long braid which falls naturally over his left shoulder and onto his chest. In fact, if not for the difference in height and the darker complexion, the casual observer could almost take Klavier as the spitting image of his brother.
Distinguishing the two, however, is rarely difficult thanks to obscenely different body language. Klavier is extremely casual in his stature, manner of speech, and facial expression. More often than not, he can be seen with a seemingly friendly, undisciplined smile and a distinct lack of professionalism in his mannerisms. He tends to be a great deal more animated while conversing as a result.
His clothes don't help paint the picture of 'prodigy prosecutor' either. He usually wears a maroon leisure suit over a black button up shirt which could stand to be buttoned all the way. He uses a big chain in lue of a belt, making it impossible to avoid hearing him walk. Hanging down his chest is a large, heavy looking silver chain necklace featuring his signature "G" emblem. Large silver rings with the same emblem adorn both thumbs and middle fingers while his left ear displays a silver earring. Obviously he spends more money on jewelry than fancy suits.
Personality
Klavier likes to describe himself as being a simple man inside and out. Certainly anyone who meets the man will find him to be the most pleasant, polite philanthropist in the law profession. Bright smiles all around, his demeanor seems consistently calm and relaxed; the type of man who isn’t psychologically shaken by much if anything at all.
As a prosecutor, his presence reveals little different. Between the need for musical accompaniment in the middle of trials and his casual disposition, Klavier seems more like he’s in court for fun rather than work. However, he remains among the best prosecutors in LA for the ferocity in which he performs when push comes to shove. Few punches are pulled when he is involved, both in regards to the defense and his own witnesses. Often the blow feels worse with that easy going smile smeared across his face. Even when his theories are proven wrong, his reaction amounts to little more than, “Hmn. Interesting.”
In truth, this pleasant attitude of his is a well constructed façade placed up for both others and himself. As he’s stated in game, he tries to keep relations civil whenever possible. Keyword being that he tries. He has shown evidence of being rather mean spirited in regards to certain people, most obvious in the case of Apollo. In and out of court, Klavier will cheerfully take every opportunity to poke fun at the attorney, place him on the spot, embarrass him, and chastise him for his mistakes. Upon closer inspection of his interactions, one can spot instances in which he subtly does this with other characters, but the man goes out of his way to do so with Apollo.
This, as hinted during their first in-court interaction, is most probably due to the fact that Apollo was the one to put his brother Kristoph away. In a way, he is extremely vindictive against Apollo, but not so much so that he would construct grand plans to disbar or ruin him in any way. When first going against Apollo, it seemed clear the worst Klavier wanted to do was defeat him in court -- pull the bastard down from his high horse and embarrass him a little in the process. It was both an affair of revenge and a self-retribution.
It was after unexpectedly losing to Apollo that Klavier’s relationship with him began to shift a little. He began to trust him more, though only slightly. During the case in which Daryan was exposed as a killer, Klavier’s trust for the attorney seemed to evolve quite a bit. Though he could still never really forgive him until post-game, the boy had earned a good amount of Klavier’s respect (though not enough to stop teasing).
Vindication aside, this façade of his covers up a more childish aspect of Klavier, one only those who work closely with the man would even be aware of. He is an obscene perfectionist, though on a different level from the infamous von Karma family. Klavier cares less about getting perfect results and more about executing perfect performance. For example, if Klavier’s albums didn’t sell as well as they did, he wouldn’t care so long as the music in those albums had been performed perfectly.
In regards to this, Klavier is afflicted with borderline Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder. Despite his pleasant conduct, he is most probably a horror to work for. He has exceedingly high expectations he feels he must achieve, and he wants this reflected in both his own performance and the work of those associated with him. He demands perfection in respect to investigation, music performance, and informational processing. Though not a neat freak per say, everything has its own place and order; something out of place is not permissible.
When things get disrupted due to a mess up, he changes completely. He suddenly gets a bit louder, more brash in his actions, and he actively whines. It’s in these instances that he will actually yell at a person, something unfathomable in his usual state. These OCD spells can last from a few minutes to all day depending on the severity. He will mentally beat himself up if the flaw is on his end and will not rest until the problem has been rectified.
Further evidence of this can be found during trials. In court, the only times he ever seems distraught is when someone on his end messed up (in case 2, he does this when he realizes he isn’t as informed as the defense since the police didn’t investigate the safe in the doctor’s office) or when he is personally conflicted due to emotional stress (like his friend being accused of murder or the truth behind his brother’s actions being revealed).
Speaking of which, being in his brother’s presence is the only other instance in which this easy going façade slips. When around Kristoph, one of two things will happen:
1. Klavier’s mask will fall completely and absolutely, leaving him almost childishly lost looking. He’ll seem confused, hesitative, openly nervous, and far more quiet and withdrawn than normal.
2. An entirely different façade is placed up, one rarely if ever seen otherwise. Klavier becomes extremely serious and all business in an almost frightening way. It’s at this point he acts like the intense prodigy prosecutor people most probably envision when first hearing about him. This is usually the case when around his brother when work is involved. With his brother watching him, Klavier feels he must act the part of no nonsense Prosecutor Gavin.
The eight-year age gap between the two makes it so Kristoph is far too old to be a best friend, but far too young to be regarded as 'parental' per say. While growing up, his elder counterpart was both an object of admiration and a standard to live up to. Though trying to remain himself, Klavier essentially shaped his life around playing catch up to his brother, going as far as choosing similar career fields and appearance. At the same time, he doesn’t want to simply live under his brother’s shadow, which is why he has adopted a style and manner so vastly different from his brother’s rather than becoming an exact duplicate. It was always his hope to eventually reach a plane equal to that of his brother, at which point he hoped they would be able to work together. After all, as a prosecutor dedicated to discovering the truth rather than winning cases, it is essential that one be willing to work with the defense.
Of course, those dreams would never be realized with Kristoph’s incarceration, the most unforeseeable of tragedies as far as Klavier is concerned. Kristoph’s murder is a rather touchy subject for Klavier both conversationally and conceptually. It took two months for him to fully accept the fact that yes, his brother had confessed to committing murder. With no evidence on hand and no information regarding the conditions behind the act, the entire situation was much harder to swallow than it normally would have been.
Kristoph had killed someone; horrible but true. But no motive had been established or mentioned. Klavier simply cannot view Kristoph as some kind of cold-blooded murderer, a person who would kill someone for no reason. There had to have been a reason… scratch that; there had to be an obscenely good, no-other-choice, “spur of the moment because something horrible happened and Kristoph wasn’t thinking straight” kind of reason. The fact that Kristoph remained mum about the motive revealed there was more to the murder than was on the report. The only thing that would keep Kristoph quiet about something so serious would be his pride, something in which it was far more embarrassing to discuss… thus something horrible must have occurred.
And so, even if Kristoph had killed someone, Klavier does not see him as a murderer per say. As far as he is aware, this is Kristoph’s only crime. Still, the fact remains that his brother is capable of killing a human being… a fact that evokes mixed feelings from Klavier despite what his opinion of the situation is. It’s this that causes him to be a bit more uneasy around his brother, though seeing as he was uneasy around him anyway it’s hard to notice.
Additionally, Klavier is among Ace Attorney’s league of genius prosecutors and indeed shows it throughout the game. He often stays focused on the larger picture and tends to catch onto things far faster than the other characters (and often the player). Despite being a very logical thinker, Klavier is very empathetic, often able to place himself in the shoes of the witness or victim and accurately determine motivations or course of thinking.
Strangely enough, his dedication to music is linked to his process of thinking. He often thinks clearer when music is playing (which is why it is often playing while in court or while working). He has stated himself that “a life without music is unimaginable.” Listening to music puts him greatly at ease, even if it’s just music in his head. He has an almost religious respect for instruments, most especially guitars. As proven in the game, he "treats them as he would his lovers," taking extreme measures to ensure they are well maintained and properly taken care of.
Regarding his rock star persona, Klavier often comes off as a massive flirt. Indeed, he does flirt a little bit, but this is due to simply loving the reaction rather than actually expecting to get anywhere. He actually has a rather unique perception of women, viewing them as adorable rather than as objects. He’s always far more willing to speak to a sweet girl than a sexy girl per say.
Throughout the course of the game, all women were treated far more courteously than the guys (whose names he often forgot, actually… or pretended to). Generally, Klavier just loves female attention, even when said attention is negative. Detective Ema Skye obviously hates his guts, but he still tends to go out of his way to go over and tease her a little. At least he realizes when to back off before anyone gets really angry.
As a side note, Klavier has what Phoenix describes as a "Euro-rock accent," which I'm assuming is a slight German tinge to his English. He speaks very proficiently and intellectually while still somehow sounding casual. Every so often, a German word or two may slip into his sentences, often as a method to emphasize a point. However, when in absolute serious mode or while upset, he'll notably drop the use of German in his speech. While around his brother, this may also include speaking very formally and professionally depending on the situation.
Abilities
Klavier has no crazy powers whatsoever (unless air guitar counts).
Due to his job, Klavier is well versed in criminal law. Thanks to his band mates, who are all related to various law enforcement agencies, he tends to be a bit more knowledgeable than the average prosecutor in regards to international law, black market information, weapons, and poisons, though he's hardly an expert on these subjects.
What he can be considered an expert in is music. He's able to both sing and play guitar exceptionally well. Since he writes the majority of the music and melodies for the Gavinners, he's also capable of reading and writing music accurately despite its intended instrument. I'm also assuming since he's capable of doing this, he's probably taken a few official music classes while in school, thus he's probably decent enough to get by on a piano as well.
About ten years of exposure to the music scene has made him extremely audibly sensitive (though not on a superhuman level, of course). He's able to detect a single missed note from a background instrument during an excessively loud concert, so he's most likely able to detect subtle sounds normal people would normally never notice. This also means it's a little easier for him to eavesdrop on conversations, but he luckily has little to no desire in ever doing so.
He primarily speaks English, but he is well versed in German as well. He can also read Borginese (an Ace Attorney foreign language which appears to be a form of Arabic) and can understand the language enough to comprehend what is being said, but he cannot speak it. Or rather, he can but it would be done incorrectly to a point, and he’d rather not try at all than mess it up.
